In Chamber of Secrets, Dobby tells Harry Potter “Master has presented Dobby with clothes! Dobby is free.” In those books, there were only three known house elves: Dobby, Winky (who later gets drunk at Hogwarts), and Kreacher. In Order of the Phoenix we learn of a whole society of house elves who are very unhappy with their lot in life. Dobby is the only elf who is happy to be free.
